The Vitamin Shoppe sells edible CBD supplements, against FDA guidance
Published April 18, 2019
The Vitamin Shoppe is the latest large retailer to announce it now carries CBD, but unlike other drugstore chains, the New Jersey-based company is selling edible CBD supplements and drops.
The move goes against repeated warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that CBD in food, cosmetics and dietary supplements remains illegal.
The company started stocking CBD softgels this week and plans to add drops later this month, according to CNBC.
Vitamin Shoppe did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Hemp Industry Daily.
The retailer, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VSI, sourced Irwin Naturals softgels, a full-spectrum hemp extract, and Garden of Life’s Dr. Formulated broad spectrum CBD extract softgels and liquid drops.
The products will be available in 14 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico. The retailer began selling hemp extract essential oils nationwide in March.
A spokeswoman told CNBC that customers need a reliable place to buy products they know they can trust, including hemp-derived CBD extracts.
Within the past month, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid have announced they each would sell products containing CBD.
Several traditional retailers also stock hemp-derived products, including Urban Outfitters, Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Neiman Marcus, Barneys and DSW.

God forbid someone starts selling CBD against USDA. But liquor is sold on every corner and kills more people every day than cannabis has in history… #WheresTheLogicInThat? . #Smacktards
There is only old bad untrue information on hemp in some people’s minds. Some weird down the dirt road wooden sign bar got ripped off recently.there is a hand made notice, asking for help in identifying the burglars. It’s a dang shack! Bars are still hidden in woods because Ok. Just finished coming out of prohibition. but, a weed with no ability to get anybody high, it has no thc or maybe one to three percent, and people fake freak out too.
Big Agra is coming for hemp. I’m sure they’ve had a plan all along,
Trump is only pres to make money and have all depts run by him. We have a mafia chief in office.
Way to go vitamin shoppe! Another reason I’ll stay a loyal customer. Absolutely ridiculous the FDA is unable to update our poorly administered federal guidelines.
All humans should have ready access to beneficial CBD. It’s silly to be having a conversation about this otherwise.
Unlike its drugstore colleagues that are mostly selling CBD-infused topicals, Vitamin Shoppe is selling edible CBD supplements and drops.
