CBD vs Turmeric
Posted on August 4th, 2020
You may have heard about CBD, as its popularity has continued to rise over the years. Many people report its beneficial use to help manage relief from aches, inflammation, and even stress. You may have also heard about the popular spice, turmeric. However, it is more than a prized and versatile spice, as it possesses numerous reported health benefits of its own. What are the benefits of turmeric? What are the benefits of CBD? Separately, CBD and turmeric have their own set of benefits, but could they be a powerful duo together? If you are wondering the answers to these questions, then worry not! Below is a comprehensive guide to help you learn more about CBD vs turmeric.
What Is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a versatile herb that is known traditionally for its role in ayurvedic medicine. Historically, it was used for ailments such as headaches, hay fever, and poor blood circulation. In Okinawa, a Japanese island, turmeric tea is a crucial part of their everyday lives. In India, turmeric was first used as a food; then, it was later used as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory product.
Turmeric is part of the ginger family and is usually harvested through the rhizomes when the rest of the plant dies. The rhizomes are then boiled, after they are harvested, and ground into a fine powder. The rhizomes are the parts of the plant that are used because they contain the most nutrients and compounds. Here is where curcumin, one of the 100 components found in turmeric , stands out. It is the bright yellow substance found in turmeric.
Studies suggest that curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits and is what is attributed to turmeric’s healing power. It may also have anti-viral, antifungal, and antidiabetic properties, and may be used to alleviate pain.
Potential Benefits of Turmeric
Curcumin might help in pain management. It does this by inhibiting the activity of certain enzymes that are implicated in inflammation and by systematically acting on the central nervous system to limit the pain impulses’ interpretation. This may be particularly beneficial for people who have epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Some studies suggest that curcumin could be used as a standalone analgesia without adverse effects on the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal system.
Relieve Symptoms of Anxiety
May Help Prevent Heart Disease
May Help in the Treatment and Prevention of Brain Diseases.
Curcumin may be able to increase the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) , a hormone found in the brain. Low levels of BDNF have been associated with diseases such as depression and Alzheimer’s.
What Is CBD Oil?
Like turmeric, CBD is also derived from a plant. Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the compounds found in the cannabis plant. However, it does not provide the euphoric high that is found in its other counterpart, THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC has psychoactive properties. CBD, on the other hand, may provide health benefits, such as helping to regulate bodily functions like aches and inflammation.
CBD oil may provide relief from numerous types of pain, including pain that is experienced from rheumatoid arthritis, neuropathic, and fibromyalgia. Other studies suggest that it may also help with improving sleep and spasticity in people with neurodegenerative disorders, such as multiple sclerosis.
Others report that CBD may offer relief to those who are battling anxiety or suffering from post-traumatic stress.
CBD and Turmeric: Can They Be Combined?
Both turmeric and CBD have great potential when it comes to their beneficial properties. So you may be wondering if the two could work together for enhanced benefits. When combined, CBD oil and turmeric have the potential to alleviate symptoms of aches, stress, and inflammation, among other things.
Turmeric only contains about 3% of curcumin by weight, which is not enough if you only eat it in food. This is where CBD comes in. Blending the two may help you reap more benefits from both elements.
CBD may offer more effects on ache and stress relief, while turmeric provides more antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making turmeric CBD a highly synergistic pair.
CBD vs Turmeric: What Are Their Potential Benefits?
Below are some of the benefits that turmeric and CBD might offer, and how together they may enhance those benefits.
Potential Anxiety Relief
This may be one of the main reasons to seek out CBD as it has the potential to offer relief to the symptoms of anxiety. And while people do not typically associate turmeric with anxiety relief, it may provide some beneficial effects. This is because of its antioxidant properties which may help fight against depression.
The immune system’s natural response to injuries and infections can lead to inflammation. However, some may experience chronic inflammation or slow, long-term inflammation. This may then lead to frequent infections, prolonged pain, and swelling. Inflammation might also lead to long term health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease . CBD and turmeric may both have the potential to help reduce inflammation with their anti-inflammatory properties.
Helps Improve Digestion
Tumeric is known for its natural remedies to digestive conditions and may boast the ability to help bloated stomachs, lack of appetite, intestinal problems, and even gastroesophageal reflux disease. CBD has also shown its potential to aid gastrointestinal issues.
How to Take CBD and Turmeric
There are numerous ways to take CBD and turmeric. CBD can be found in a variety of forms, including tinctures, topicals such as creams or lotions, pills, water-solubles, and more. If you are familiar with turmeric, then you may know that turmeric can be added in many different recipes, including turmeric tea. And, there are ways to consume the two together. If you have turmeric CBD oil, you can take it in the same way as any CBD tincture. Place a few drops under the tongue, and let it stay there for a minute or so before swallowing. This sublingual administration will allow the compounds to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the sublingual veins, which will be more effective than going through the digestive system.
You can also decide to take turmeric CBD through capsules, gummies, and vapes. However, each method impacts the bioavailability and rate of absorption differently. For example, sublingual administration has a higher bioavailability than that of a capsule. CBD topical creams are also quite efficient and have a high bioavailability.
Side Effects of Turmeric and CBD
Both CBD and turmeric are known to have a low risk of side effects. However, it is crucial to remember that every person is different, and how you will react to turmeric or CBD may not be the same as others. Therefore, it’s important to speak with your doctor before introducing any new supplements into your routine and to note any changes while taking new supplements. Some users may experience the following side effects:
- Dry mouth
- Digestive problems
- Changes in appetite
- Drug interactions
Turmeric capsules are not recommended for people suffering from hormone-sensitive conditions such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, gallbladder problems, or hemophilia.
It is therefore advised to always start with a minimal dosage of turmeric or CBD, and build up from there, gradually. This will help reduce the risk of getting side effects. Because dosing can be tricky, it’s crucial to start with the lowest dosage possible to avoid any unwanted side effects.
Before embarking on this journey, it is advised to talk to a medical professional. Your doctor will best advise you to navigate on introducing CBD or turmeric into your routine as they may interact with certain medications. Not all products are created equal, so be sure to also check the dosage instructions on the product label, as the recommended amount will help guide you to the results you are looking for.
Turmeric vs CBD: both may boast numerous benefits, including their potential effects on your immune system, anti-inflammatory properties, and even digestion. Before you start your journey with CBD, turmeric, or the two combined, always purchase from a reputable manufacturer that provides a certificate of analysis and third-party testing. This will ensure that you are purchasing high-quality products. To get the most out of your CBD use, look for full-spectrum products with a full range of terpenes and cannabinoids.
