What is CBD oil?
CBD oil is concentrated CBD along with other cannabinoids that exist in the cannabis plant, and they are extracted into an oil base.
The oil helps cannabinoids from the plant to absorb into the body better because they are fat-soluble.
How CBD oil works in the body
CBD is a cannabinoid that has a relaxing effect. There are hundreds of cannabinoids that have different effects, but THC and CBD are the main two compounds.
Each cannabinoid has different effects on the body
When you take a cannabis product, it activates our Endocannabinoid System giving us different effects.
The effects of CBD are both medicinal and therapeutic. The main impact is promoting homeostasis in the body, which means keeping everything balanced. Some other effects include:
- Treating anxiety and depression
- Reducing mild and chronic pain
- Improving the quality of sleep
CBD oil is taken sublingually. So this means you put it under your tongue for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. The cannabinoids in the oil get absorbed through the glands under your tongue into your bloodstream. It takes between 5-20 minutes to feel the full effects.
How does CBD affect libido?
The research on CBD and erectile dysfunction
Research has shown that cannabis can be beneficial for ED.
There’s more research on the psychological symptoms compared to physiological symptoms when it comes to erectile dysfunction.
CBD oil derives from hemp, which is a strain of cannabis. The cannabinoid profile is low in THC and high in CBD.
All types of CBD oil have been shown to provide beneficial effects for alleviating ED.
These effects include:
- A decrease in anxiety and stress
- Treating performance anxiety
In 2017 a clinal psychologist name Susan Stoner did a scientific review for the University of Washington. She discussed how higher amounts of THC increased anxiety, whereas CBD did the opposite.
Another study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. They found that CBD could be ideal for men who only want to treat their ED momentarily rather than taking medications long term.
Sexual Benefits of using CBD oil for ED
1. Relieves anxiety
Anxiety plays a significant role in erectile dysfunction. It’s a broad term that encompasses all types of stress. The most common would be performance-related.
If you can minimize anxiety, you can focus on the present moment without being stuck in your head.
So how does CBD oil help with anxiety? Well, CBD enhances Serotonin release, which is a neurotransmitter that makes you feel happy. It also creates a calming sensation that helps relieve stress and anxiety, which can help you perform better.
2. Boosts libido
As you know by now, anxiety is a risk factor for erectile dysfunction. When you’re calmer, your libido increases because you’re focusing on the present moment.
This dramatically increases sexual health because your sex drive will be active again. Instead of taking something like viagra, this can be a more natural alternative.
Viagra doesn’t necessarily help with anxiety. It helps promote blood flow. Taking CBD oil before intercourse or sexual activity will calm you down and let the good times roll.
3. Enhances relaxation
By now, it sounds like a broken record. CBD oil reduces stress and anxiety. So what else does this mean? Better relaxation. It helps calm your body and mind, which makes sex more enjoyable.
4. Intensifies pleasure
The supply of nerves to the penis is responsible for sexual arousal. In other words, having an erection. Taking CBD oil is known as a nervous stimulant that can improve sexual health. It also helps you experience more intense orgasms.
5. Increases autonomic nervous activity
The autonomic nervous system is responsible for sexual functions. When your Endocannabinoid system is activated after taking CBD oil, it enhances the autonomic nervous system activity.
When this nervous system is increased, it boosts your sexual activity that aids with erections.
How to Use CBD Oil for Erectile Dysfunction
1. Optimize your diet
Try taking a more plant-based approach. Meta-analyses have shown that a whole foods plant-based diet are the only diet that can reverse heart disease and promote amazing blood flow.
More blood flow means better erections.
This doesn’t mean you have to go vegan, but eating a diet high in plant foods is optimal for blood flow.
Diets that consist of high amounts of meat clogs the arteries, which makes it harder to pass blood through different areas of the body, including the penis.
If you reduce your meat intake and introduce more plant foods, you should see a significant difference. You can watch this video to discover more.
Another thing you want to try and minimize the amount of alcohol you consume. Drinking alcohol has been shown to cause dehydration and also damaging the nervous system, which is responsible for causing erections.
2. Choose the right type of CBD product
CBD is an unregulated market. This means a lot of products, including CBD oil, are of poor quality. Most people don’t even know what they’re buying.
First, you want to choose the right type of CBD oil. There’s full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate.
Full-spectrum CBD oil contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes that work in synergy to give you optimal effects. The other types of CBD oil remove some of these cannabinoids and terpenes, which makes it less effective.
Before you even consider buying CBD oil, you need to make sure that it’s lab-tested. A lot of people are testing positive for marijuana even though they are taking a CBD oil product. This happens because buyers didn’t look out for lab tests to show how much THC it has.
A CBD oil product should have less than 0.3% THC. This is what a lab-test looks like:

The lab test should be shown on the companies website or on the product itself. If it doesn’t have this then most likely they have something to hide.
3. Take it before sexual activity
The effects of CBD oil occur within 10-30 minutes.
If you don’t feel the effects at all, then you need to experiment with different dosages. You also need to build CBD up in your system so that your Endocannabinoid system is activated more efficiently.
Start low and increase your dosage every day until you get the desired effects.
Once you’ve found your dosage, take it 30 minutes before sexual activity, and you should be able to relax.

- Research overview
- What the experts say
- Bottom line
Commonly referred to as ED, erectile dysfunction affects 30 million American men of all ages. The causes of erectile dysfunction may be physiological, psychological, or a combination of both. Certain men may be at greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction, such as those who are older than 50, are overweight, or have heart disease.
For these men, there is hope in the form of prescription medications or psychotherapy, depending on the root cause. Weedmaps News recently reported that cannabidiol (CBD) may enhance sex, making it more satisfying and less painful for both partners. Could CBD oil, specifically CBD-rich cannabis oil, which retains other cannabinoids and terpenes, offer similar benefits for men with ED?
A greater amount of research exists for managing the psychological symptoms of erectile dysfunction than the physiological ones. In particular, CBD oil has shown to be effective in decreasing anxiety in a number of studies. While most studies utilized CBD oil that was either broad-spectrum or full-spectrum, CBD isolates (products that lack THC and other compounds), may also provide beneficial effects. Because CBD is such a significant part of the cannabis plant, cannabis itself could play an important role in alleviating ED.
Performance anxiety may be a factor for men whose ED has a psychological origin. Susan A. Stoner’s 2017 scientific review for the University of Washington discussed how cannabis in small amounts lowered anxiety. Stoner, a licensed clinical psychologist who is a research consultant for the University of Washington’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, noted that higher amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) had the opposite effect and increased anxiety, while CBD provided more consistency. This is a prime example of successfully using CBD-rich cannabis oil as opposed to THC-rich cannabis oil.

Similarly, a 2018 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that cannabis lowered anxiety levels, stress, and depression in the short-term. The potential benefits of CBD and other cannabinoids could be ideal for men who do not want to take medications long term but would prefer to treat their ED situationally.
Obesity is one physical cause of erectile dysfunction that CBD could potentially treat, although CBD on its own was nowhere near as effective as CBD paired with tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) in the supporting study. In 2012, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published an article titled, “Cannabis Could Be Used to Treat Obesity-Related Diseases.” Science correspondent Richard Gray wrote about the revealing study conducted by GW Pharmaceuticals: “When the scientists examined two compounds, called THCV and cannabidiol, they were found to have an appetite-suppressing effect.”
The CBD/THCV combination could indirectly help men with ED by decreasing appetite and, potentially, contributing to weight loss. Based on this evidence, a broad-spectrum product which contains both of these beneficial cannabinoids could be useful. Cannabis product labels should list which cannabinoids are included and in what concentrations. Only lab-verified products are guaranteed to be pure.
Cannabis use has repeatedly been linked to lower body mass index (BMI), rates of diabetes, and other metabolic diseases. Because CBD is either the primary or secondary ingredient in most varieties of whole-plant cannabis, it could play a very important role in managing BMI, which would support healthy sexual function for men. The specific role of CBD in these conditions is still being investigated.
What the experts say
From the perspective of treating ED-related anxiety, CBD-rich oil may be helpful, according to some experts.

Diana Urman, a certified sex educator with a practice in San Francisco, believes that CBD can help reduce sexual anxiety. In a 2018 interview with HuffPost, Urman said, “Many people say they feel more spontaneous and adventurous [after using CBD]. There is also sometimes an increased sensitivity to touch and increased willingness to be more engaged and sensual which, in turn, enhances sexual pleasure and deepens orgasmic abilities.”
While the results are not guaranteed, CBD-rich oil may be worth trying for men who want to be less inhibited in bed and treat their ED without the side effects of prescription medications. As Dr. Perry Solomon, chief medical officer at HelloMD, said in a Men’s Journal article in 2016, “The way I see it, why not try cannabis? There are side effects to Viagra and zero side effects to cannabis when dosed properly. Maybe it’s just making them feel better and relaxed, and that’s making it easier for them to enjoy sex, but it’s still working.”
However, moderation is key, as some research has indicated that too much cannabis can actually cause ED, even while it increases sexual desire.
While the role of cannabis and CBD in erectile dysfunction is not clear, it’s possible that these interventions, alongside other healthful lifestyle choices, could affect ED by improving mood and metabolic function.
