What is CBT (Cannabicitran)?

CBT Meaning

CBT is short for Cannabicitran. What little is known about CBT is that it is found in highest concentrations in the distillates from the Type III flowers of the cannabis plant, which have high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). However, compared to most other cannabinoids, it is found in relatively low concentrations. Chemically, CBT is classified as a diether, which means that it has the same chemical relationship with CBD as CBD has with THC. Since it has the special quality of being the last cannabinoid retained on the chromatography column that chemists use to identify compounds, chemists may be able to use CBT as a marker for the end of all the known cannabinoids identified from a sample.

CBT History

Even before it was discovered to be a naturally occurring cannabis product, CBT was synthesized in 1971 by the famed British natural chemist Leslie Crombie, who originally called it “cytrilidene cannabis”, suspecting that he had made a replica of a natural product from the cannabis plant. Two years later, that hunch proved true when Ludwig Bercht and colleagues isolated a product from cannabis resin and realized it was identical to the compound Crombie had created.

CBT May Help with Glaucoma

But after isolating CBT, precious few research studies have been published on its effects. One study, performed over 35 years ago by longtime cannabinoid researcher Mahmoud ElSohly, was promising: CBT was found to reduce pressure within the eyes in rabbits, making CBT a potential treatment for glaucoma and other conditions.

The Future of Minor Cannabinoids

Like many minor cannabinoids, research has been limited due to cannabis prohibition. With the 2018 Farm bill removing hemp from Schedule 1 status and many states legalizing recreational marijuana, the doors will be open for the scientific community to be able to freely study many parts of the cannabis plant that are currently unknown. Much of the current attention is going towards CBD and THC as they are so abundant in cannabis, but as our knowledge of how these compounds interact with our body expands, focus will turn towards the other 120 minor cannabinoids we know very little about.

Cannabitriol (CBT)

Researchers have been able to isolate a new cannabinoid called Cannabitriol, or CBT, from the marijuana plant. CBT occurs only in a small amount of cannabis and further research needs to be done pertaining to its health or euphoric effects. It has been found that CBT has a structure similar to THC, a primary psychoactive compound that produces high effects.

First reported in 2014, it is yet to be studied whether Cannabitriol is psychoactive or has any therapeutic benefits. Since Cannabitriol is found in very small quantities and not in all cannabis plants, makes the research studies even more difficult. Marijuana legalization issue is another drawback in conducting detailed research on the cannabis compounds.
